Bullying happens when their is an imbalance of power with insecure feelings about ones self and a need for an outlet. In any bullying case, both the bully and the victim/s are not ready to learn. So what do we do about this?
Bullying pledges are very useful to schools because it gets all students on board of what is expected and not expected. By letting them know what is tolerated and not tolerated sets boundaries. The students should know that when these boundaries are broken, there will be consequences. I chose these two bulling pledges for several reasons. The one on the right is like a contract. When they sign this contract, it becomes part of them and if they happen to break the contract, the teacher can pull this contract out and remind the student of the pledge they signed to be apart of. Also, since the student signed this document, it is important that you get the parents involved too. The pledge above, I feel can be really effective when it comes to adolescent students. Today, almost everyone in schools has some sort of social media account. One of the more famous ones, Twitter, is referenced to in this pledge. Not only are student able to connect with the pledge in this way, but it also stands of importance that bullying can happen on social media as well. Even though that other individual is not face to face with the bully does not mean they are not affected by it in any way, shape, or form. It is important for teachers and schools to talk to their students about what is aloud in the classroom and school and what is not aloud. We cannot punish a student if they were not aware of the rules in the first place. We have to keep this in mind with all punishment, not just with bullying. We also have to talk to our students about what Bullying is, how it happens and where it can happen. Like mentioned above, a lot of students do not consider what is said on social media, as bullying. So we need to talk to our students about all of these. We can do this through teacher to classroom, teacher to full class or teacher to school. A lot of schools have a professional in this area come to their schools to hold a presentation and to talk to students about Bullying. I find this very helpful because its someone else talking instead of the teachers. However, I also think that it is important for the teachers to be there as well. Not only the students learn from these presentations but the teachers can as well. Behaviorism like bullying can be seen in Pavlov's theory. "Behaviorism is a world view that assumes that a learner is essentially passive, responding to environmental stimuli. The learner starts off as a clean slate (tabula rasa) and behavior is shaped through positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement. Both positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement increase the probability that the antecedent behavior will happen again. In contrast, (both positive and negative) decreases the likelihood that the antecedent will happen again. Positive indicates the witholding of a stimulus. Learning is then defined as a change in behavior in the learner." http://www.learning-theories.com/behaviorism.html |
